There may be a moment ahead that someone you love will remember for the rest of their life.

It might be the instant your granddaughter sees her name on a college acceptance letter. Your son finally holding the child he waited years to meet. A wedding, a first home, a hard-earned victory, or a quiet conversation that becomes precious only later.

Wanting to be there is deeply human. It is also why promises about “anti-aging,” “cellular renewal,” and “longevity” can be so persuasive.

Here is the truth: no supplement can promise that you will live long enough to witness a particular family moment. No honest company, doctor, or website can make that guarantee. Supplements cannot replace blood-pressure treatment, cancer screening, vaccines, movement, nourishing food, sleep, or medical care.

But that does not mean every supplement is useless. The right supplement, used for the right reason, may correct a deficiency, support strength training, or slow a specific disease process. The important question is not, “What should everyone over 70 take?” It is, “What does this particular person actually need?”

That is the question we will answer here.

The short answer

For most generally healthy adults without a known deficiency, vitamin and mineral pills have not been shown to prevent death, heart disease, or cancer. A large evidence review for the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force found little or no important protective effect from most vitamin and mineral supplements. It specifically recommends against beta-carotene and vitamin E for preventing cardiovascular disease or cancer. Evidence remains insufficient to say that a standard multivitamin prevents either condition.

That finding does not mean nobody needs supplements. It means supplements work best when there is a specific reason to use them—not merely a birthday.

The most defensible possibilities for an older adult are:

  1. 1Vitamin B12 when deficiency or poor absorption is present or likely
  2. 2Vitamin D and calcium when a clinician identifies a bone-health or deficiency need
  3. 3Creatine monohydrate alongside appropriate resistance exercise
  4. 4AREDS2 for people with particular stages of age-related macular degeneration
  5. 5Omega-3 in selected circumstances, with food usually taking priority
  6. 6Glycine or GlyNAC as an emerging option—not a proven longevity treatment

None belongs automatically in every medicine cabinet.

1. Vitamin B12: valuable when the problem is real

Vitamin B12 is essential for blood formation and nervous-system function. Some older adults have difficulty releasing naturally occurring B12 from food because stomach acid declines with age. Metformin and acid-suppressing medicines can also affect B12 status.

A deficiency can contribute to anemia, fatigue, numbness, balance problems, and cognitive changes. Those symptoms have many possible causes, so buying a bottle based on symptoms alone is not a diagnosis.

Our verdict

B12 can be genuinely important when a blood test or medical history suggests deficiency or impaired absorption. More is not automatically better, and B12 should not be sold as a universal energy or memory treatment.

A sensible next step

Ask whether B12 testing is appropriate, especially if you use metformin or long-term acid-reducing medication, follow a vegan diet, have gastrointestinal disease or surgery, or have unexplained anemia or neurologic symptoms.

2. Vitamin D and calcium: build a bone plan, not a pill pile

Bones matter because a fracture can change independence, mobility, and the ability to participate in family life. Yet vitamin D and calcium marketing often jumps from “important nutrients” to “everyone needs a supplement.” The evidence is more complicated.

Research on calcium supplements and fractures in older adults is mixed. Some trials suggest that calcium combined with vitamin D can reduce fractures in certain groups, while broad preventive supplementation has not shown a universal benefit. Excessive vitamin D can cause high calcium levels and kidney stones; calcium supplements can also create problems for some people.

Our verdict

Vitamin D and calcium are not proven longevity pills. They may be appropriate when diet is inadequate, blood levels are low, osteoporosis is present, or a clinician has developed a fracture-prevention plan.

A sensible next step

Review dietary calcium, vitamin D status, kidney history, bone density, and medications with a clinician or pharmacist before choosing a dose. Food sources of calcium may be preferable when practical.

3. Creatine: promising for strength—but it needs a partner

Creatine is often pictured beside young bodybuilders, but preserving muscle has a different meaning later in life. Stronger legs can support getting out of a chair, climbing steps, carrying groceries, and remaining involved in the world.

A 2025 meta-analysis of randomized trials found that creatine combined with resistance training produced modest improvements in lower-body strength and lean tissue mass in older adults compared with resistance training alone. Another recent analysis found improvements in strength but not total-body bone density.

The important words are “combined with resistance training.” Creatine is not exercise in a scoop, and the evidence does not show that it keeps people alive longer.

Our verdict

Plain creatine monohydrate is one of the more evidence-supported supplements for older adults who can safely participate in resistance exercise. The benefit is likely modest, and individual results vary.

A sensible next step

Discuss exercise safety and kidney health with a healthcare professional. If creatine is appropriate, choose a plain, independently tested creatine monohydrate rather than a costly proprietary blend. A clinician should know about its use because creatine can affect the creatinine measurement used when estimating kidney function.

4. AREDS2: a strong example of targeted supplementation

AREDS2 is not a general eye vitamin. It is a specific combination studied for particular stages of age-related macular degeneration, or AMD.

According to the National Eye Institute, AREDS2 may slow progression to late AMD in people with intermediate AMD in one or both eyes. It may also help protect the other eye when late AMD is present in only one eye. It does not prevent early AMD from becoming intermediate AMD, and it is unlikely to help when late AMD is already present in both eyes.

Our verdict

AREDS2 is a legitimate, evidence-based use of supplements—but only for the right diagnosis and stage.

A sensible next step

Do not diagnose yourself from blurry vision or a product label. Ask an eye doctor whether you have the form and stage of AMD for which AREDS2 was studied.

5. Omega-3: look at the purpose, not the fish on the label

Omega-3 fatty acids are important nutrients, and fatty fish provides EPA and DHA along with protein and other nutrients. Fish-oil labels, however, can be misleading: “1,000 mg fish oil” does not mean 1,000 mg of EPA plus DHA.

Evidence does not support treating ordinary over-the-counter fish oil as a guaranteed heart, brain, or longevity product for every older adult. Prescription omega-3 products used for particular medical indications are different from general supplements.

High-dose omega-3 supplementation has also been associated in some trials with a greater risk of atrial fibrillation. People taking anticoagulants or preparing for surgery should discuss omega-3 use with a clinician.

Our verdict

Food first is a reasonable starting point for many people. A supplement decision should depend on diet, medical history, purpose, dose, and the actual EPA-plus-DHA content—not the picture on the bottle.

6. Glycine and GlyNAC: promising science that needs an honest label

Glycine is an amino acid the body uses to make proteins and other important compounds, including glutathione. It is inexpensive, widely available, and generally well tolerated. Interest in healthy aging has grown around GlyNAC, a combination of glycine and N-acetylcysteine (NAC) designed to provide two building blocks for glutathione.

The early findings deserve attention—but not exaggeration.

In one placebo-controlled randomized trial, only 24 older adults were randomized, with 12 receiving GlyNAC for 16 weeks. Researchers reported improvements in glutathione status, oxidative stress, physical function, and several exploratory markers associated with aging. That is encouraging, but the study was small and did not establish that GlyNAC prevents disease or extends life.

A separate randomized trial in 114 healthy older adults tested several GlyNAC doses for two weeks. GlyNAC was well tolerated, but it did not significantly improve the study's primary glutathione outcomes across the full group. A post-hoc subgroup appeared to benefit, which is a reason for further research—not proof for everyone.

There is another essential distinction: GlyNAC research is not the same as research on glycine alone. A product containing only glycine cannot honestly claim all the results reported in trials that combined glycine with NAC.

Product consideration: Life Extension Glycine

Life Extension's current glycine product provides 1,000 mg of glycine in one vegetarian capsule with a short ingredient list. The company's suggested use is one capsule one to three times daily. That simple formulation makes it easier to understand exactly what is being purchased and avoids a hidden proprietary blend.

Those are meaningful positives, but they do not prove that this is the best glycine product for every reader. A fair comparison must also examine independent testing, price per gram, capsule count, swallowing burden, and comparable products. Life Extension Glycine should receive prominent consideration because of its straightforward formula—not because of loyalty to the company.

Our verdict

Glycine is scientifically interesting and Life Extension offers a clean, clearly labeled option. Evidence is not yet strong enough to say that glycine alone prolongs life, prevents cognitive decline, or reproduces the outcomes of GlyNAC trials.

A sensible next step

Ask a pharmacist or clinician before using glycine or NAC, particularly when managing chronic illness, taking several medicines, or preparing for surgery. If the purpose is to reproduce a GlyNAC study, do not assume a glycine-only capsule is equivalent.

What we would not buy for “living longer”

High-dose antioxidant formulas

The USPSTF recommends against beta-carotene or vitamin E supplements for preventing cardiovascular disease or cancer. Beta-carotene increased lung-cancer risk in people who smoke or had asbestos exposure. High doses of certain vitamins can also cause harm.

Proprietary longevity blends

If a label hides ingredient amounts inside a “proprietary blend,” you cannot tell whether the dose matches a clinical trial—or whether several ingredients create unnecessary interaction risks.

Products promising to reverse aging

Changes in a laboratory marker or “biological clock” do not prove that a supplement adds years of healthy life. Words such as rejuvenates, detoxifies, age-reversing, and clinically proven deserve careful scrutiny.

A supplement chosen only from a testimonial

A moving personal story can be sincere and still fail to establish cause and effect. Symptoms change, medical treatments work, and coincidences happen. A testimonial cannot reveal how everyone else responded—or who was harmed.

The most important supplement appointment may be with a pharmacist

Supplements can alter how medications are absorbed or processed. The FDA warns that some combinations can be dangerous or even life-threatening. St. John's wort can reduce the effectiveness of several medicines. Combining products that affect clotting—such as warfarin, aspirin, ginkgo, and vitamin E—can increase bleeding risk.

Before adding a supplement:

  • Put every prescription, over-the-counter medicine, vitamin, powder, tea, gummy, and herb on one list.
  • Include the dose and how often you use it.
  • Ask a pharmacist or clinician to check the complete list.
  • Repeat the review when a medicine changes, a surgery is scheduled, or a new diagnosis appears.

Bringing the actual bottles to an appointment can be more reliable than trying to remember every label.

What deserves priority before another bottle

If the goal is to remain present for the people you love, the unglamorous decisions often matter most:

  • Take prescribed medicines correctly and discuss side effects rather than quietly stopping treatment.
  • Keep blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes care on track.
  • Stay current with recommended screenings, vaccines, dental care, hearing care, and eye exams.
  • Build strength, balance, and walking capacity at a safe level.
  • Eat enough protein and nourishing food.
  • Protect sleep and address untreated sleep apnea.
  • Do not smoke, and seek help if stopping is difficult.
  • Make room for people, purpose, laughter, music, games, and family.

A supplement may support one part of that plan. It should never distract from the parts with stronger evidence.
